4/5 Eggs
I really enjoyed this short mystery treat and am going to try to give a review without spoilers!
It is written in first person, and the character's voice (Carolyn) is strong throughout this piece. I could identify with her, and found her take on things very entertaining. Absolutely loved the use of stereotypes in the beginning. The story is very fast paced, and I was entranced by it from beginning to end. I don't think I looked up once while reading it.
What drops it down one egg for me, is that when all is said and done and the mystery is solved there are a few things that I wonder about. Although, I have to say that after reading it, I'm still thinking about it several hours later so that is pretty awesome. While I was reading A Taste for Killing, I was truly entertained, and had suspended disbelief. However, afterward I thought back on it, and wondered about a few holes that I felt were left in the story.
Some things that left me pondering about A Taste for Killing, include, if the "killer/s" is capable of doing what they did. Not much background is given on any character, and I wonder about the character/s backgrounds. Is that character truly mentally intelligent, and physically fit enough to commit the crimes they did? Also, I wonder about time tables. Some events seem to happen incredibly fast, which allows for a great steady pacing to the novella, but not sure how accurately portrayed the events are.
I'm intrigued with the other investigator Jack. The heroine is given two potential love interests in this story, and I find that really refreshing. It is so much more akin to real life that a woman may have interests in more than one person. When the story heats up, the story really heats up! Hot, hot, and more hot! I would like to see what Sterling has in store for these characters in the future.
